The Kintampo Municipal, one of the twenty seven
districts in the Brong Ahafo Region, was created in 1988 by Legislative
Instrument 140 sequel to the Government’s decentralization programme with
Kintampo as its capital. It is located between latitudes 8045’N
and 7045’N and longitudes 1020’W
and 201’E. The municipal capital, Kintampo is about 130KM
away from the regional capital and lies east of the capital, Sunyani. The
municipal has a surface area of about 5,108km2, thus occupying a
land area of 39,577km2. Kintampo is divided into two as a result of
its relative location. That is Kintampo South which has its capital as Jema and
Kintampo North.
In terms of location and size, the Municipal is
strategically located at the center of Ghana and serves as a transit point
between the Northern and Southern sectors of the country.Naturally, Kintampo is
gifted with a number of tourist centers which over the years have pulled a number
of people towards the municipal and also to the region as a whole.
More interestingly, any person who has ever visited
Kintampo is surprised to find out that, though the place is known for its
tourist sites but seems underdeveloped even though it has taken the name of
municipal capital. Within a year, the number of visits to these sites is
uncountable. Apart from the visits, there have been numerous programmes
throughout the year ranking from artist and others but still the place is
underdeveloped. This has raised a lot of questions from a number of people.
I have been in Kintampo for more than 18 years and
sometimes I do wonder whether the municipal really have leaders. The following
includes some of the disturbing wonders around the place.
THE
POINT FOR THE CENTER OF GHANA
Kintampo is known on paper to be the center of Ghana
as a result of its Geographical location. There was raised a structure showing
the area in which the said center is. However, the structure made for this center
as at now is nothing to write about. It’s very dirty and neglected even by the
least person in town. People who visit this place find it very surprising to
see just a piece of wall describing nothing.
Information gathered shows that the structure was
made in October, 1992 and little rehabilitation made to it by the assembly. The
last painting done was made somewhere in 2007.
The Member of Parliament in the Kintampo North
during his quest for a re-election made some silly promises. He said on air on
one radio, Adars FM that, he will build a house at this point known to be the
center of Ghana. He also said the house will have what we call a library. In
this library according to him will contain all the history about Kintampo and
Ghana so that any person visiting will know more about the municipality. After
the elections in 2012, this Member of Parliament had neither been heard nor
seen at till date concerning the center of Ghana.
Photos taken show the very poor state of this site.
The question to ask is what is the assembly really doing about this? What are
they doing with the little money gathered every day from the tourist sites, and
from the market women? These are questions I wish I had answers to.
Take
a good look at how the center of Ghana looks like.
The above photo is
what represents the center of Ghana. It’s a shame. The last time this structure
was painted was in 2007. This is not the responsibility of anyone but the
assembly.
More importantly, it will be a huge credit to Kintampo
municipality if this structure is put into good shape. I
therefore call upon the media houses to put the municipal office and all the people
responsible for the development of the town to their knees till the right thing
is done.
