Defeated Presidential Goodluck Jonathan has called opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him for a historic victory which sees an opposition party win a first ever presidential election in Nigeria.

Buhari' All Progressive Congress won by an excess of two million votes after polling 14,954,400 to beat Jonathan's People's Democratic Party which polled 12,827,522.

Borno state, the heart of a Boko Haram offensive is the only state left to be declared.

Former military leader Gen Buhari has tweeted 'wait for it, wait for it' as he urges his supporters to hold on pending confirmation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

INEC is expected to confirm the victory later in the evening.

But this has not stopped wild celebrations in the North where Buhari's stronghold sits. This is his third attempt and it has proved third-time lucky.

The last election between the two candidates resulted in 800 deaths after violent protests
