Well, perhaps the greatest manager in football history has had his say, and, unsurprisingly, Sir Alex Ferguson has opted for Ronaldo.
The legendary former Manchester United boss brought the Portuguese superstar to Old Trafford as a youngster, and nurtured him through his early career before his big-money move to Real Madrid.
Fergie acknowledges Messi's talent, but says Ronaldo has a better all-round game.
Speaking at the World Snooker Championships, he told John Parrott on the BBC: "People say, who is the best player in the world? Plenty of people say Messi, and you can't dispute that opinion.
"But Ronaldo could play for Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers or anyone, and score a hat-trick in a game. I'm not sure Messi could do that.
"Ronaldo has got two feet, quick, good in the air, brave - Messi is brave of course, I think Messi is a Barcelona player."
Fergie also revealed that Ronaldo, along with Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, were the players he saw most improvement from during his time at Old Trafford.
