When things don't quite go to plan, you can always rely on your mum to give you a bit of moral support.

And when you are a £50million footballer, it is still the case, as David Luiz has proven.

The Paris Saint-Germain centre-back suffered a nightmare night at the hands of Luis Suarez and Barcelona, being nutmegged by the Uruguayan for both of his goals.

After being criticised by the media, pundits and supporters alike, Luiz has had a bit of support from the place you can always expect it.

That's right, his mum has come out and made a statement via Instagram, ensuring the world that she does indeed still love him.

David Luiz’s mother, Regina CĂ©lia, posted: “I have a son and I always will! His head held high, with a ball at his feet. God knows everything! Jesus is fighting for us until this day and yet we still have people who judge! Who are we to judge you! I will always love you after the good games, and even more after those that don’t go well!”

Suarez's double pretty much put to bed the Champions League quarter-final tie, as the Catalan giants will take a 3-1 lead into the second leg at the Nou Camp.

Neymar scored early on before Gregory van der Wiel scored a deflected consolation in the dying moments.

Following the match, Suarez said that he had no option but to nutmeg Luiz on both occasions.

He said: “Forwards are always hunting for goals. The nutmeg on David Luiz was the last option open to me for the third goal and thankfully it went in and helped give the team more security.”

Marco Verratti, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Motta were all missing for PSG for the tie, while Thiago Silva was replaced by Luiz just 20 minutes into the match.

But the injuries and suspensions are no excuse for the result, insists PSG boss Laurent Blanc.

He said: “I do not want to talk about what could have happened with other players on the pitch. We did not lose because we were missing players, but because of little collective mistakes.”
