The music industry's top names won big during the BET Awards - but it was Janet Jackson who was the woman of the hour.

The singer received a huge honour as she picked picked up the accolade for Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual at the ceremony held in Los Angeles on Sunday.

A video montage of her greatest moments was shown, followed by live re-creations of her legendary dance routines from Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe.

The 49-year-old then delivered a heartfelt speech as she thanked her fans around the world.

She said: "I've missed you so much and I love you so much. Thank you. Thank you BET."

Janet wasn't the only name to take home a gong at the star-studded bash, as Beyonce and Chris Brown also won big.

The pair were named Best Female and Best Male R&B/pop artist at the event hosted by Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Rossas.

Nicki Minaj also made a splash after she was announced as Best Female Hip Hop Artist.

The 32-year-old rapper showed she hadn't forgotten her roots as she personally thanked her mum during her acceptance speech.

She said: "I always talk about my mommy and this is the first time the world is going to see her. I love you so much."

The night also saw P Diddy fall into a hole during his performance of It's All About The Benjamins, in which he was joined by several artists, including Lil Kim, Faith Evans and French Montana for a medley of his greatest hits to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Bad Boy Records.

However, like a pro, he made a quick recovery and got up immediately.
