Controversial Ghanaian rapper, Kwaw Kese has retracted an earlier call for the legalisation of cannabis in Ghana.

The rapper, who was jailed for smoking cannabis, had called for the legalisation of the herb in a Facebook post Monday.

According to him, it is long overdue for authorities to put in place the needed legal instrument to make smoking of cannabis legal in Ghana.

This, he said, will pave the way for people to smoke the substance without being prosecuted.

The rapper wrote on Facebook, “Thanks to these ‪#‎MadTimerS for that support when they arrested me for enjoying my choice of smoke. I think it's time to legalize ‪#‎Taaba so that those 80% who shhhmoke in Gh can enjoy their choice of smoke without any interventions!!!

“Why should a person be jailed for smoking when it's their choice???” he wondered and added that, “After all cigarettes are poisonous and harmful but it's for sale!!! ‪#‎legalize ‪#‎Ntampee now !!! ‪#‎Yakubu”

But the rapper, born Emmanuel Botchwey, appears to have been forced to delete and apologise for the post.

In another post on Tuesday, Kwaw Kese said, “I am sorry for my earlier comments about #NtampeeLegalization !!! Many are insulting and more misquoting. Am not advocating for anyone to go and smoke. But I believe we all know a lot of us smoke. My family not happy about the post , so I took it off.”

Kwaw Kese, was tried for narcotic offences and was sentenced to a day's imprisonment. He also paid a fine of GHc1,200.

A Kumasi High Court gave the ruling in April this year after the rapper was arrested by the police in Kumasi on November 22, 2014 for smoking cannabis in public.
