“Making beats like [Jay Z’s] ‘Renegade’ and ‘Moment of Clarity’, that sh*t is just fun for me. Just to even hear Jay rhyme over a beat that I did is like a f*cking dream to me,” says Eminem. “I’m a stickler for chord progression, and I always try to make sh*t that feels like something. Jay is so good at picking up on that, what the feel and mood of the beat is, and write sh*t to say to that beat, because it’s that mood.”
Besides Hov, Em has also worked with Nas on “The Cross” and Redman on “I C Dead People.” He discussed how grateful he is to have produced for emcees of that caliber.
“To make the beat for Nas, to do anything like that. Making a beat for Redman was like, ‘I’m making a f*cking beat for Redman,'” adds Em. “Those guys are some of my favorites of all time. Obviously, any accolade or anything that comes with this territory, I’m always appreciative of. I love it. I’m honored, but doing sh*t like that is hands down the best reward this could have ever brought.
While Eminem admits he prefers writing raps to creating tracks at the moment, he does mention some of his producer peers whose work he enjoys. Slim names DJ Khalil, Denaun Porter, Just Blaze, Boi-1da, The Alchemist, and Dr. Dre among his favorites right now.
Eminem’s production talents can be heard on the Southpaw soundtrack. The album and the film are both out today (July 24).
