Artists typically want compensation when another performer uses elements of their song, but Curren$y told DJ Smallz that Kelly wanted all of the publishing royalties from “How High.”
“This is rap where sh*t like that is understood as a nod like, ‘That was a dope record.’ I really thought that was going to be fine,” explained Curren$y. “R. Kelly wanted 100% of the song. Everything! Like he wrote the verses and everything.”
He added, “Why would you want 100% of mine? When the part that I’m using is the part I’m pretty sure [the song’s producers] The Trackmasters wrote.”
According to Spitta, Lloyd saved the day by sending the record back with his own interpretation of the hook.
