Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal policeman was wounded in a shoot-out with armed robbers in Inanda on Friday night, police said.

KZN police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said at around 21:00 on Friday that police were patrolling in Phoenix when they received information about a housebreaking in Verulam.

They later spotted the suspected robbers driving a silver grey Toyota at high speed in Inanda and a chase ensued.

"An attempt was made to stop the vehicle, but the occupants started to fire shots at the police. The vehicles came to a standstill and the occupants fled the scene on foot, still firing at the police."

Zwane said a Constable Ndlovu was shot in the shoulder and taken to the hospital.

The vehicle was found to have been hijacked in Malvern earlier.

Zwane said the robbers earlier targeted someone on Sunlark Drive in Dawncrest, where they allegedly attempted to hijack a silver Mercedes Benz E200, but were disturbed and fled with the victim's house keys.

A case of attempted murder was being investigated and no arrests had been made.
