Cape Town – An ANC MP has called for racists to be "blacklisted".

Jabulani Mahlangu made the call during a debate on racism in the National Assembly, which was requested by FF Plus MP Pieter Mulder.

Mahlangu reiterated the call for the criminalising of racism.

"We call for the establishment of a national register of racist offenders as part of tightening the legislation. We need to ensure that racists are blacklisted," he said.

He said the list of racists should be made available to embassies, so they might reject applications for visas and work permits.

Mulder said racism must be condemned by all.

He questioned the root of the university protests.

He said the current protests were mostly artificial.

Mulder said small numbers of activists were fuelling the violence in the universities.

DA MP Professor Belinda Bozzoli said it was not unexpected that racial hatred had emerged.

"The unstoppable force of increasing numbers of poor students has met the immovable object of the costs of running proper universities," she said.

EFF MP Thembinkosi Rawula said the violence of racism frowned on black dreams.

He said black people were not considered human by racists.

This, he said, was why it was normal for black people to earn up to six times less than their white counterparts.

UDM MP Nqabayomzi Kwankwa said Afrikaans should not be forced on students.
