A 44-year-old branch chairman of the party in the Obuasi Municipality in the Ashanti Region, Abdul Ishaq Farrakhan filed his nomination to challenge Mr. Asiedu Nketia.
He claimed, among other reasons, that Asiedu Nketia has failed to stand up for the interest of the party’s members at the grassroots who contributed largely to the NDC’s presidential victories in 2008 and 2012.
But speaking to Citi News, Asiedu Nketia said opposition is nothing new to him in his political career spanning over three decades.
He stated that he has never contested a position in his political career unchallenged, adding that, he has been victorious in all his attempts.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia recalled that “with this General Secretary contest, in my first attempt; we were four contestants including an incumbent but I emerged defeating the incumbent and the other two.
“And in the immediate past contest, there were big men and women behind the other candidate. That did not worry me. I did not engage in any discussion, debate or exchanges on radio and so on. In the end, with all the powers behind that candidate, he managed about six percent of the votes and I had 92%.” He pointed out that there is no reason to be “worried about anybody contesting against me so I don’t have any problems at all.”
The NDC’s General Secretary also confirmed to Citi News, the date for the congress has been moved from December 13 to December 20, 2014 citing a number of reasons for the postponement.
“There are reports we are receiving about hotel bookings, the availability of accommodation, the grounds and many other challenges and it seems to be pointing in one direction that the 20th will be a more realistic date,” he said.
Asiedu Nketia indicated that he has since had discussions with the Presidency, the Parliamentary caucus, the Council of Elders and “they all seem to agree that we could take an administrative decision to announce the 20th and that date will be ratified as soon as we have time to do a NEC meeting.”
The NDC will be electing national executives at its national congress in December.
