Skipper Rooney reckons United can challenge Chelsea and City if Van Gaal’s men can maintain their winning run over the Christmas period and the top two slip up. It would complete a remarkable turnaround for United, who ended last season in seventh spot, their worst Premier League finish, with David Moyes sacked after just 10 months in charge.
But Van Gaal has restored belief at United and Rooney said: “I think we have to believe we can win the title. “We’re eight points behind and coming into a busy period. If we can win our games and the others have one bad result, then there’s nothing there.
“We’ve been here before but we have a lot of new players and this is where the experience of myself, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher can rub off on the other players. “We have to keep winning our games and hopefully get back to the top and you never know. We’ve shown a great resilience.
“Some of the games haven’t gone the way we would like, but we’re winning them and that’s a great quality to have. “We won the league two years ago and we weren’t great in a lot of those games, but we got the results.
Sometimes you have to do that. “I’ve seen Chelsea a couple of times this season where they’ve not played great but have nicked games as well. “We need to try and get the performances right and, if we do that, the we’re confident we’ll win the games.”
