Prisons are communities on their own and as it is expected people in such communities must have access to the services of doctors.

But this cannot be said of our prisons. All prisons in the country have just infirmaries taking care of prisons officers, their families and the about 16 thousand inmates.

Ironically, there is no single doctor working in these infirmaries and the reason is that they always refuse postings there.

Controller General of the Prisons Service Matilda Baffour Awuah cites lack of incentives as a major reason.

Meanwhile, Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Justice Yankson blamed government for the unfortunate situation.

He noted that if until the right incentive and working facilities are made available the situation will pertain.

“Government and the private sector are now competing for the limited doctors available if it will continue to treat doctors like slaves, the situation will persist,” he stressed.

Dr. Yankson urged government to, as a matter of urgency, work on the incentives at avert any pandemonium in the health sector.
