The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekufful says President Mahama’s frequent trips abroad is a clear demonstration difficulty in living in the country in its current state.

She said the president has failed to make life comfortable for the people of Ghana and instead of fixing the many problems the country is plagued with; he picks up his bags and hops from one country to another, neglecting his duties.

Speaking on Peace FMs’ morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, the outspoken NPP MP said “President Mahama has created a mess for all of us and he can’t live in it. He only comes to drop his dirty laundry, picks fresh ones and leaves.”

Mrs Ekuful was speaking on the current power crisis that is said to be crippling business and causing great inconvenience for many.

She accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of lying to the people of Ghana when they promised in 2012 electioneering campaign that they were going to find a solution to the energy crisis known in local parlance as ‘dumsor’.

In her view, instead of admitting their fault and finding a way to solve the problem, the party is trying to cover up by signing contracts which will not help the situation.

She said the NDC is more consumed in its desire to win elections than to help lessen the struggles of Ghanaians.

President Mahama has taken responsibility for the crisis which has now entered its third year. Several reasons have been given by government for the crisis. The lack of consistent gas supply from Nigeria and high cost of petrol to power the engines have all contributed to an erratic power supply.

However, the power crisis seems far from ending as GRIDCo has hinted of intensified load shedding in the coming days due to a generation shortfall of more than 500 megawatts.

The shortfall represents almost a third of the entire 2,000 megawatts needed for distribution.

According to the Volta River Authority (VRA), the power crisis has intensified again as a result of low water levels in the Akosombo, Bui and Kpone Dams, coupled with inadequate gas supply from Nigeria and the breakdown of some power generators.

But the MP says it is baffling that for close to three years the government has not been able to find a long-term solution to the problem. She said government has ignored the most important things that affect the lives and well-being of the people.

She advised that the president quits listening to his advisers and heed to the cry of the people if he desires to achieve something worthy.

“President Mahama”, she said, “stop listening to your advisers, they are doing you harm. Listen to the cry of the people. We deserve a whole lot better than this.”

In order to encourage the use of solar panels, Mrs Ekufful said government must reduce taxes on their importation to attract more people to use solar energy. Construction companies should also be charged to put solar panels on new projects, she stressed.
