The England midfielder has signed a new five-year contract that will take his wages beyond the £100,000 a week barrier and keep him at Anfield until 2020.
That lucrative agreement has finally ended the doubts over the future of the rising star, with both Manchester City and Chelsea linked with bids for him after negotiations dragged on for so long.
And he admitted there is some relief that he has finally come to an agreement to keep him at the club until beyond his 29th birthday, because he has never had a thought of playing for any other club.
“I'm relieved yes – I'm over the moon that it’s all done just so I can concentrate on the future and what needs to be done (with Liverpool) now.”
Asked whether there was a point during protracted contract negotiations – which have dragged on for much of the season – whether he felt he would no come to an agreement and have to look elsewhere – with City and Chelsea lurking in the background - he insisted:
“Not really, no. For me it was just a case of leaving it to the club and my agent to sort it out. I always said that I wanted to stay at Liverpool and there was no other club that I would go to.
“I wanted to commit my future and it was just a matter of time for my agent and the club to sort it out. Thankfully today it’s done.”
Henderson is favourite to succeed Steven Gerrard as Liverpool captain when the veteran midfielder leaves at the end of the season after filling that role as stand in skipper for much of this campaign, but there were no discussions about that situation during contract negotiaitons.
The deal though, will make him the second highest paid player at Anfield when Gerrard and Glen Johnson depart, and puts him on a level just behind Daniel Sturridge in the Anfield pay grades.
