Thompson, also a former Hearts coach, has been battling the condition for the last two years.
But the Ghana superstar has stepped in to help, by pledging to completely foot the bill for the procedure.
Asempa Sports reporters at the hospital said the player met his former coach at the hospital by chance, as his main aim of being there was to visit the heart treatment wing.
Thompson is said to have reacted with shock at the news.
Gyan also came across another patient on admission at the facility and asked to foot those bills as well.
The main donation
These two gestures from the Al Ain and the Black Stars skipper were an aside for his main mission to the facility on Tuesday, when he presented a cheque of $10,000 to the Cardiothoracic Center of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
“Everyone needs to chip in to help as much as they can and this is my small contribution to the good work being done at the hospital,” the player said.
Gyan is engaging in public awareness activities ahead of this year’s edition of the Stars Soccer Fiesta, a yearly gathering of players in aid of charity.
Kumasi hosts this year’s edition, which will be the fifth in the series.
