Pretoria - Riot police dispersed a mob of angry protesters who stoned cars and barricaded the R104 near Lethabong in Tshwane on Monday night.

Police have advised motorists to stay away from the area with pockets of protesters using the cover of darkness to evade police and hurl stones at passing vehicles.

Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba told News24 that the protests occurred after a meeting between representatives of the community and the Tshwane City council.

“In that meeting they [the community] were unhappy about the feedback they got from the city. The meeting was adjourned and they went outside and barricaded the road with burning objects and tyres,” he said.

“We managed to disperse them and we arranged the fire department to come and clean up the road and it is now open. The challenge that we are facing is that they [protestors] are hiding in the area because it is dark and they have been throwing stones at cars,” he said.

“We advise motorists to stay away from the R104 until it is safe.”
