Durban – KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has praised police for their "outstanding" work in the arrest of two men suspected of burgling a furniture store in Paulpietersburg.

Ngobeni said on Friday that the police had been "alert".

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said police on patrol became suspicious of a grey Audi parked near a furniture store.

They approached three suspects, two of whom fled in the Audi, while another escaped on foot into nearby bushes.

After a brief chase, Zwane said the driver of the Audi lost control of the vehicle which "came to a standstill".

"The [two] occupants fled the scene on foot. Later both suspects were arrested. It appeared the suspects were involved in a burglary at the furniture shop and goods were taken."

He said the missing items from the shop were recovered during the arrest.
