Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said rescuers were on standby in the area for a regatta when the Fish Hoek Sailing Club told them of a drowning in progress further up the beach.
Two men could be seen in difficulty in the surf-line and it look like rip currents were pulling them out to sea.
A team which included life guards and paramedics got them out of the water but the 67-year-old man was not breathing.
He did not have a pulse either and despite extensive CPR efforts he was declared dead.
His 37-year-old son was in a serious condition with non-fatal drowning symptoms and chest pain and was airlifted to hospital.
He is expected to recover.
Lambinon said the younger man is South African but lives in the UK and was on holiday to visit his father who lived in Fish Hoek.
Meanwhile, five men from the boat Albatross were rescued by crew aboard the boat Getavis when their boat capsized on Saturday.
They were not injured and NSRI Simon’s Town towed the capsized boat in for them.
