Johannesburg – The ANC Women’s League said on Thursday evening that while it respected the ruling made by the Constitutional Court, it remained firmly behind President Jacob Zuma.

The Court ordered the National Treasury to determine a reasonable portion that Zuma must pay for five non-security items – including a visitors’ centre, a swimming pool and a chicken run – at his private home and report back to the Court within 60 days. The Court ordered Zuma to make the payment within 45 days after that.

“We have learnt lessons from the judgment, and wish to state it unequivocally, unambiguously and categorically clear that we firmly stand behind the ANC president, Jacob Zuma, who, even before the ruling, indicated his preparedness to pay in accordance with the public protector's recommendations,” the party’s secretary general, Meokgo Matuba, said in a statement.

The ANCWL said its faith in and support of Zuma remained unshaken, saying it had “full confidence of the nation’s development under his leadership”.

Matuba said the ANCWL would continue to uphold the ANC and its decision to seek recourse on the matter.
