Many of us have heard that going to sleep when it is dark outside is healthy, as light and darkness influence our circadian rhythm. But how exactly does light affect our sleep-wakefulness cycle? New research may have found part of the answer. 
 
Now that summer is here, those of us who want to sleep in after 6 a.m. will need a good pair of blinds; light tends to wake us up. But why does this happen? 
 
The majority of us know that light plays a role in regulating our circadian rhythm, but how light directly affects sleep is poorly understood. Researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena set out to examine the effect of light on sleep. 
 
The lead investigator of the new research - which is published in the journal Neuron - is David Prober, a professor of Biology at Caltech. 
 
Prof. Prober explains the motivation behind his research, saying, "Researchers had previously identified the photoreceptors in the eye that are required for the direct effect of light on wakefulness and sleep. But we wanted to know how the brain uses this visual information to affect sleep." 
 
To get their answers, Prof. Prober and team chose to examine zebrafish, which are animals that have a sleep/wakefulness pattern similar to that of humans, and whose visual system is transparent, thus enabling researchers to take images of their neurons in a non-invasive manner. 
 
How a protein responds to light 
 
First author Wendy Chen conducted the experiments. She used zebrafish that were genetically modified to express a certain protein, called prokineticin 2 (Prok2), in excess. 
 
The researchers found that the zebrafish who had over-expressed Prok2 tended to go to sleep during the day and stay up during the night. 
 
Interestingly, this did not seem to depend on the fish's regular circadian rhythm. Instead, the effect was influenced exclusively by whether the lights were turned on or off around them. 
 
The results of the experiments indicate that Prok2 can inhibit the waking effect that light normally has, as well as the sleep-inducing effect of darkness. 
 
Next, the scientists induced genetic mutations in both the zebrafish's Prok2 and its receptor, to see how these would affect the light-controlled sleep-wakefulness pattern. 
 
They found that the zebrafish developed "light-dependent sleep defects." For instance, fish with a mutated Prok2 receptor tended to be more active when the lights were on and less so when they were off - which is the opposite of what had previously been noticed in fish with excessive Prok2 but functional Prok2 receptors. 
 
Finally, the scientists set out to investigate whether light, in order to regulate sleep, needed other sleep-inducing proteins in the brain. 
 
The researchers found that excessive levels of Prok2 also raised the levels of galanin, which is a neuropeptide found in the brain's anterior hypothalamus (which plays a key role in regulating sleep). 
 
More research is needed in order to understand the sleep-promoting interplay between genes and neurons in humans, as well as to investigate whether or not the Prok2 neuropeptide has the same effect in humans. 
 
If further research determines that the proteins behave similarly in the human brain, this study could pave the way for new sleep- or wakefulness-inducing medication. 
 
Prof. David Prober adds, "Though diurnal animals such as zebrafish spend most of their time asleep at night and awake during the day, they also take naps during the day and occasionally wake up at night, similar to many humans. 
 
"Our study's results suggest that levels of Prok2 play a critical role in setting the correct balance between sleep and wakefulness during both the day and the night."

1. Know your anger 
Where does it stem from? How is it grown? You may think your anger is
 natural, something organic that comes from within; but that is not the 
truth. Something happened to make you feel this way, and so you must 
endeavor to figure it out. 
For every negative emotion, there is a source. Though contemplating 
where such strong emotions develop from can be troubling, the more you 
know, the better prepared you are to deal with in when it comes. 
 
2. Ask yourself questions 
All of these questions lead to answers (and maybe more questions) 
that will bring you to the root of the ire. Examples of those questions 
are: 
• Who is making me angry? Myself or someone else? 
• Did I remember any particular hurt from my past? 
• What is the current environment like? 
• What was I talking about? 
• How do certain works affect the way I feel? 
At the bottom of the wrath are smoldering coals that need to be 
stirred up to regain life. Think of these coals as past trauma or hurt. 
When someone does something that rekindles the dormant flame, the anger 
returns. It may not always be as strong, but it will remain until 
healing or cooling happens. 
 
3. Let love control the flame 
This means that in order to soothe this vengeful flame dwelling 
within, you must learn not to disregard that anger. Learn to accept it. 
Learn to love yourself. That is where love begins and hate recedes. 
Further, find someone who will love you for being you. This person 
does not have to be a SO. They merely have to be the ever-patient and 
virtuous guide. This individual’s chill will help you in controlling the
 anger. 
You will learn through their example how to manage the anger. So if 
that means anger management classes, then you do that. If that means 
getting uber-spiritual, you do that. 
 
4. Relax 
Most of the time, anger is a direct product of anxiety running amok. 
The heart begins to pump faster, the adrenaline starts working overtime,
 and you just get unreasonably furious, like a bull trained to attack 
the red cloth. Managing anger is, again, a two-part process of first 
loving and accepting who you are; secondly, you need to relax. 
 
Seriously, I did not say your guide needs to be “chill” without a 
reason. Simple relaxation techniques can actually soothe angry emotions 
when done correctly. For example, you may visualize something that makes
 you feel warmer and safer. 
 
This could be laying in a field of dandelions with the sun gently 
caressing your skin or the trickling of water over stones. Breathe 
deeply, filling your chest with nurturing breath. 
 
Do not allow yourself to hyperventilate. You may turn into the Hulk, 
otherwise. Anger does not have to be some untameable horse, nor do you 
have to break it to make it work. 
 
Anger is often the negative product of misunderstood emotions, so 
allow yourself to get to the root of the issue. Talk to someone who 
understands, or look for the answers by yourself. Stay cool, breathe, 
and remember that when you accept what is happening, you can feel more

WhatsApp now lets users write or draw on photos and videos, as well as add emojis, as it steps up competition with rivals such as Snapchat. When taking new photos or videos, or sharing those already on the phone, the new editing tools will be shown automatically. The update, first introduced in a testing phase last month, also adds front-facing flash for “the perfect selfie”. “In low light and at night, this will brighten up your screen and improve the quality of your photo,” the app maker said. Also new is a zoom feature for video recording. The update is already rolling out to Android phones and will come to iOS soon. However, WhatsApp still doesn’t have some of Snapchat’s most popular features, such as animated selfie filters and augmented reality 3D stickers. This is also not the first time WhatsApp’s parent company Facebook, which tried to buy Snapchat for $3 billion in 2013, has been inspired by the ephemeral app maker. I must say this works although you might be able to see all the updates of the individual who has either blocked you or deleted the account. If your friend has blocked you, you can however go through her profile and pictures but not have access to everything any other friend would. Step 2 Click the address bar at the top of the screen. Erase any Web address that is currently listed. Step 3 Enter the URL of the Facebook account that you suspect has blocked you. The URL looks like this: “www.facebook.com/name,” where “name” is replaced with the account you are checking. If you do not know the URL, there is no way to find it. Step 4 Press “Enter” to view that person’s Facebook page. If the person’s Facebook page appears, that person has blocked you. If you receive a Facebook error, the account is deleted. Viewing A Blocked Profile If You Don’t Have The URL Step 1 Log out of your Facebook account. Step 2 Navigate to any search engine. Step 3 Enter the name of the person or business you are trying to find. Try “name facebook” and replace “name” with the name of the person or business. While you can block someone on Facebook, you cannot block them from viewing your page from an outside source. Step 4 Scroll through the found entries. If you find their Facebook account, it is a sign that they blocked you. If the account does not appear at all, they have deleted their account.

If you are so much into heights, then this research is purely for you. When it comes to height, Dutch men and Latvian women tower over all other nationalities, a new study confirms. The average Dutchman is now 183cm (6ft) tall, while the average Latvian woman reaches 170cm (5ft 7in). The research, <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.13410">published in the journal eLife</a>, has tracked growth trends in 187 countries since 1914. It finds Iranian men and South Korean women have had the biggest spurts, increasing their height by an average of more than 16cm (6in) and 20cm (8in). In the UK, the sexes have gone up virtually in parallel by about 11cm (4in). “Mr Average” in Britain is now 178cm (5ft 10in) tall; Ms Average stands at 164cm (5ft 5in). This contrasts for example with men and women in the US, where the height of the nation’s people started to plateau in the 1960s and 1970s. Over the century, they have seen increases of just 6cm and 5cm (a couple of inches), respectively. Indeed, Americans have tumbled down the rankings. Back in 1914, they had the third tallest men and fourth tallest women on the planet. Today they are in 37th and 42nd place. The height charts are now utterly dominated by European countries, but the data would suggest that growth trends in general in the West have largely levelled out. The smallest men on the planet are to be found in East Timor (160cm; 5ft 3in). The world’s smallest women are in Guatemala, a status they also held back in 1914. According to the survey data, a century ago the average Guatemalan 18-year-old female was 140cm (4ft 7in). Today she has still not quite reached 150cm (4ft 11in). The eLife paper – A Century of Trends in Adult Human Height – was put together by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, a group of 800 or so scientists, in association with the World Health Organization. The work, which was funded by the Wellcome Trust and Grand Challenges Canada, was presented here in Manchester at the biennial EuroScience Open Forum. More than 1.5 billion people use Facebook. And only half speak English. The rest speak so many dozens of other languages, effectively silo’d off from the English speakers and, in many cases, from each other. It’s a case of social media being rather asocial. 
 
But that’s changing. If you stumble onto a Facebook post in a foreign language, Facebook lets you instantly translate it—in a semi-effective way. And beginning today, millions of people will have the option of instantly translating their own posts into any one of 44 other languages, so that they will automatically show up in your News Feed in your native tongue. For the first time across the social network’s general population, Facebook is testing its “multilingual composer,” and though the initial test is limited, the aim is reach that far off point where everyone in the world can readily talk to everyone else. “That’s why I came to Facebook,” says Necip Fazil Ayan, who oversees the company’s translation efforts and grew up in Turkey. “That’s my personal agenda.” 
 
Businesses and celebrity types could already use this multilingual composer through Facebook’s Pages service. Each day, about 5,000 businesses and celebs publish nearly 10,000 posts in multiple languages. These are viewed about 70 million times a day, and more than a third of the time, they’re viewed in a foreign language. Ayan follows international footballers like Ronaldinho, a Brazilian star who uses composer to post not only in Portuguese, but Spanish and English. “I only see the English,” Ayan says. Now, millions of others can post in the same way. 
 
Ayan and team designed the composer specifically for people with a multilingual audience. It also lets them edit the machine’s translation or even provide their own. But the ultimate goal is to automate the entire process, for everyone. 
 
Machine translation is hardly perfect, but it’s improving. Today, Facebook will automatically translate among 45 languages, and it handles this task largely with traditional algorithmic models that rely on language statistics (essentially how often words and phrases appear in natural language). But when translating from English to German, the company is now leaning heavily on deep neural networks—networks of hardware and software inspired by the web of neurons in the brain—and this, Ayan says, provides a noticeable improvement. In recent years, deep neural nets have proven enormously adept at learning certain tasks—like recognizing faces in photos or identifying spoken words—by analyzing vast amounts digital data. Now, they’re also improving machine translation and natural language understanding, where a machine truly grasps the meaning of the words and sentences it translates. The plan is to push this tech across Facebook’s entire machine translation engine. 
 
The same transformation is happening across the net. Microsoft’s Skype translation service leans on neural networks, and according Joseph Sirosh, who oversees Microsoft cloud computing services related to data and machine learning, the tech is moving into other Microsoft translation services as well. Certainly, neural nets are still a long way from mastering machine translation, even in tandem with other tech. But many researchers see a path toward that goal. 
 
To reach this future, we need more and better data. That’s what neural nets thrive on. And Facebook’s multilingual composer plays a role here as well. Because people can edit translation and add their own, it generates additional data. This will be particularly helpful, Ayan says, with all the languages outside the 45 where the company already does translation. “From Catalan to Turkish? We don’t have enough data,” he says. “So this too will help with our overall mission: breaking language barriers.”

The hip-hop musical Hamilton unsurprisingly dominated this year's Tony Awards where host James Corden paid tribute to the victims of the mass shooting in Florida. 
 
The critically-acclaimed Broadway production, which tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers, won 11 awards including best musical after receiving a record 16 nominations. 
 
Briton Cynthia Erivo won best performance by a lead actress in a musical for her role as Celie Harris in The Color Purple. 
 
Fighting back tears on stage, she said: "I promised myself I wouldn't cry because my make-up artist would be really mad at me. 
 
"Thank you American Theatre Wing for making a London girl very, very happy." 
 
The awards were dedicated to the victims of the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando which left at least 49 people dead and another 53 in hospital.

Corden opened the show with a message which said: "Our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity. 
 
"All we can say is you're not on your own right now. Your tragedy is our tragedy. 
 
"Hate will never win. Together we have to make sure of that. Tonight's show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle." 
 
The attack prompted the cast of Hamilton to drop their Revolutionary War muskets for their performance at the awards, a spokesman for the musical said. 
 
Speaking before the ceremony in New York, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the star and creator of Hamilton, said the shooting was "heavy in my heart and heavy in my mind". 
 
Veteran American actor Frank Langella, who won best performance by a lead actor in a play for his role in The Father, urged Orlando to be "strong" in the wake of the atrocity. 
 
"When something bad happens we have three choices," he said. "We let it define us, we let it destroy us, or we let it strengthen us. 
 
"Today in Orlando we had a hideous dose of reality. 
 
"I urge you Orlando to be strong because I'm standing in a room full of the most generous human beings on earth and we will be with you every step of the way." 
 
Jessica Lange won the award for best performance by a lead actress in a play for her role as morphine-addicted Mary Tyrone in Long Day's Journey Into Night. 
 
"This is a dream come true," she said. "It fills me with such happiness even on such a sad day as this." 
 
Hamilton, which is expected to open at London's Victoria Palace Theatre in October 2017, has achieved rave reviews and sell-out performances since making its debut in February last year. 
 
However, it failed to beat the record 12 awards won by The Producers in 2001. 
 
Corden, who won a 2012 Tony Award for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors, hosted the 70th Tony Awards following his successful stint as the presenter of The Late, Late Show in America. 
 
The ceremony also featured Barbra Streisand, who took to the Tony Awards stage for the first time in 46 years to hand out the best musical award.

3. He reserves his "LOL" for actual laughter, which he exudes out loud and often. 
 
4. He isn't looking to play "pen pal" with you through your iPhone because he knows that all text and no play makes Johnny a very dull boy. 
 
5. When he's interested in a woman, he doesn't wait three days to call her, but he does actually call her, and when he does, he asks her out for dinner, makes reservations, picks a great bottle of wine (because he knows how to) and then makes sure she gets home safely.

8. He opens doors and takes coats, not because he feels a woman is weak, but because he is strong enough to show that he cares about the comfort of those around him. 
 
9. Sure, he might want to get into a woman's bed, but he's also interested in getting into her head as experience has shown him that seduction is a delicate dance and the man who resides in her mind has conquered every other part of her. 
 
10. He appreciates a woman who shows she cares for him, but he isn't interested in being courted. He enjoys taking the lead in courting and doesn't need to be "chased" because he's in desperate need of an ego stroke. He also won't play "puppy dog" to a woman who takes advantage of this.
