Liverpool have asked Zenit St. Petersburg manager Andre Villas-Boas to outline his coaching philosophy and credentials as Reds owners openly consider replacing Brendan Rodgers, in one of the most shocking moves of the season so far.

That is according to the Sunday Times, who published an article today claiming that Liverpool's owners, the Fenway Sports Group, are so upset with the club's failure to mount any kind of title challenge that changes could be imminent.

Rodgers was handed £115 million to compensate for the loss of Luis Suarez in the summer, but quite frankly his signings have been a huge disappointment so far this year and unless results improve quickly he could pay for that failed recruitment drive with his job.

llas-Boas restoring reputation at Zenit

Any formal approach for Villas-Boas would be nothing short of a total shocker and probably a move which would infuriate the vast majority of Liverpool fans, primarily because he's not met the mark as a top Premier League coach.

Villas-Boas lasted just 18 months in the hotseat at Tottenham Hotspur and prior to that couldn't see out a single season as Chelsea boss, going some way to damaging the reputation he'd worked so hard to build as one of the game's most promising young coaches.
Crucial period for Liverpool could decide Rodgers' fate

A lucrative move to Russia has revitalised his fledgling career though, with his short tenure at Zenit St Petersburg a definite success thus far. The Russian champions are seven points clear at the top of the table and still in with a chance of reaching the Champions League knockout stages, with Villas-Boas

That success has clearly impressed Liverpool owner John W. Henry, who has sanctioned a tentative approach to sound Villas-Boas over the possibility of making it third time lucky in English football.

Much depends on how Liverpool fare against Basel on Tuesday night and during a hectic run of festive domestic fixtures which includes games against Arsenal and Man United, but the FSG's plans to revive Liverpool make Champions League qualification a necessity and if Rodgers can't deliver that he could well be moved on very soon.
