Zack Clements, a fit and athletic 17-year-old, collapsed during a PE lesson at school, causing his heart to stop beating for 20 minutes.
When medics managed to revive him and found a pulse the youngster was airlifted to hospital.
He woke up in intensive care several days later.
Doctors have been left lost for words as to how Zack, of Texas, managed to survive.
However, the youngster says that when his heart stopped beating he was visited by Jesus who told him "everything would be alright."
"When I was out those 20 minutes, I saw a man who had long ruffled hair and kind of a thick beard, and it didn’t take me long to realise that that was Jesus," Zack told CBS DFW.
He added: "I went up to him and he put his hand on my shoulder and he told me everything would be alright and not to worry."
Zack's family are now convinced that divine intervention saved their boy who collapsed while running.
His dad Billy said: "For him to wake up and tell us something he experienced like that. It’s just you can’t explain it. It’s not humanly possible to explain it."
Mum Teresa added: "I’m just glad he decided to let me have my baby back."
Zack now plans on returning to school once he is given the all clear by doctors.
