Cape Town - The City of Cape Town was left red-faced after it had to arrest one of its own law enforcement officers for allegedly drag racing down Koeberg Road in Milnerton last week.

"It is not only embarrassing to the city, but it is also a smack in the face of the public who look to our staff to set an example," JP Smith, the City’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, said on Monday.

The officer was arrested by the "ghost squad" at the popular illegal drag racing strip.

Another person was arrested in Blue Downs on the same evening.

The long straight stretch of dual carriage way has been a popular spot for years with drivers keen to show off their modified rides.

In an effort to get them off the road, the nearby Killarney Race Track, also known as the Western Province Motoring Club, has started "Robot Ride" events to get drivers off the streets.

The law enforcement official faces disciplinary charges at work, and criminal charges of reckless and negligent driving.
