NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that a rescue mission was launched after the vessel had been directed by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to sail towards the nearest port, Port Elizabeth.
“This was following an illness to a 35-year-old Republic of the Union of Myanmar sailor whose condition, suffering an intestinal illness for the past week, had deteriorated and the patient was reported to be unconscious,” he said.
A rescue craft managed to rendezvous with the bulk carrier nearly 10 nautical miles from shore.
“The rescue paramedic and NSRI rescue crew were transferred on board and the patient was found to be in a critical condition and unconscious.”
“A lowering rig was erected and the patient was lowered onto the sea rescue craft where medical treatment continued while the patient was brought to the Port Elizabeth sea rescue base,” he said.
The sailor was taken to hospital.
